“This project is very important to us, because through it we speak for Ukraine — for our home, our family, friends, and our people. We believe that art has the power to change perspectives and minds."

A PHOTO AND VIDEO SERIES ABOUT
RESILIENCE AND HOPE FOR UKRAINE SHOT AND DIRECTED BY PIETER HENKET IN COLLABORATION WITH CHOREOGRAPHERS VLADYSLAV DETIUCHENKO
& VERONIKA RAKITINA
ABOUT
Wings of Light is a fine art photo and video series shot and directed by Dutch, New York–based artist Pieter Henket in collaboration with Ukrainian movement directors and choreographers Vladyslav Detiuchenko and Veronika Rakitina. At once personal and universal, the project speaks to Ukraine’s struggle for freedom and survival while honoring its cultural legacy.
The series captures choreographed performances that reflect resilience and vulnerability, creating staged images and moving visuals that preserve both intimate and collective stories of war. As Detiuchenko says, Wings of Light is also “a responsibility and an important mission: to draw attention, awaken empathy, and support unity for a future without violence and loss.”
By combining dance and photography, the project uses two universal languages to convey human emotion with immediacy and permanence. It is, ultimately, about humanity itself — “to create, not destroy; to love, not dominate; to help, not take away.”
Project produced by stichting n’Era.

WHEN THE SKY SPOKE
As if the sky itself had begun to collapse upon the earth. One by one, people packed their former lives into a small emergency suitcase. An entire universe reduced to something that could be carried in their hands.
And they clung to it — like an anchor, like something sacred — while the heavens split open above their heads.Small (56 × 75 cm), Edition 1 of 7 – €5.450,00

Motanka
The Motanka is an ancient symbol embodying the millennia-long cultural and spiritual experience of the people who, across centuries, lived on the territory of Ukraine. It is a protective talisman that carries the wisdom of the past and affirms the continuity of generations. It expresses the national identity of Ukrainians and stands as a vital part of our historical memory.
The red thread is the line of life — a living connection between past and future, a bond that weaves each of us together.Small (56 × 75 cm) Edition 1 of 7 – €5.450,00

CHAOS
Reflects the first minutes and days of the war in Ukraine — when chaos and panic overwhelm the human being. It captures that moment when reality fractures, when the familiar dissolves, and the body reacts before the mind can comprehend. Disorientation, fear, urgency — everything collapses into a single, unstable present.

TOWER
This image was born from the pressure that war places on structure — both physical and human. The architecture tilts, shifts, trembles — yet it remains standing.
Order is no longer guaranteed. Balance becomes an effort.

Falling
Poem by Ukrainian poet Lina Kostenko, “Wings”:
Truly, wings need no ground.
If there is no earth, there will be sky.
If there is no field, there will be freedom.
If there is no pair, there will be clouds.
Perhaps this is the truth of birds...
But what about humans? What about humans?
They live on earth. They do not fly themselves.
Yet they have wings. Yes, they have wings!
Those wings are not made of fluff or feathers,
But of truth, virtue, and trust.
Some from faithfulness in love.
Some from eternal striving.
Some from sincerity at work.
Some from generosity in care.
Some from song, or from hope,
Or from poetry, or from dreams.
Humans seem not to fly...
Yet they have wings. Yes, they have wings!Small (56 × 75 cm), Edition 1 of 7 – €5.450,00

Pulled Apart
The photograph was born from the personal story of Vlad & Veronika — translated into movement.
When the war began, they were forced to separate. It was not their decision — it was the consequence of war. In a single moment, what had felt natural and unquestionable became impossible: to see each other, to hold hands, to simply be side by side.
Since 2022, millions of Ukrainians have found themselves on different sides of borders. Husbands and wives, parents and children, brothers and sisters — separated by countries, continents, and the front line. Some stayed to defend their homes, while others were forced to flee and begin new lives in unfamiliar lands. Around 7 million Ukrainians became refugees outside the country. Another approximately 3.7 million became internally displaced, remaining in Ukraine but far from their hometowns. Nearly ten million lives — this is not just statistics. It is the scale of broken embraces, unspoken words, and cancelled reunions. It is life divided into “before” and “after.”Small (56 × 75 cm), Edition 1 of 7 – €5.450,00

Fallen Tower
The bodies that only a moment ago formed a living architecture now lie on the ground — like fragments of a tower that has lost its vertical axis. Not scattered by chaos, but lowered by weight. There is no panic in their stillness. There is an exhausted silence. This is not a scream. The scream has already dissolved into the air. It is the dull, internal sound of impact — the one that remains in the body after the outer echo has faded.

PHOENIX
We will rise from the ashes, for we carry a light within us — a light that no darkness can extinguish. Even when everything around us seems consumed by shadow, when fear, loss, and uncertainty close in from all sides, that inner flame remains. The photograph takes its inspiration from the dance piece Everglow by Vlad & Veronika.

THE ROOT REMAINS
From generation to generation, the land — the living soil itself — has been one of the deepest values for Ukrainians. Not merely territory, but earth you can touch, sow, and trust. Life was inseparable from it. For roots cannot take hold without soil.
As long as the roots remain in the ground, life is never truly lost. It withdraws into stillness, into quiet dormancy, gathering strength beneath the surface. And when the time is right, it rises again — tender, persistent, inevitable.Small (56 × 75 cm), Edition 1 of 7 – €5.450,00

LEANING
During war, a person becomes acutely aware of the fragility of their own balance. Ukrainians experience this state as a profound recognition of interdependence — an understanding that endurance is possible only by leaning on one another.
In this photograph, the gesture of support becomes a metaphor for survival. Bodies incline, search for equilibrium, and transfer weight — both physically and emotionally.Small (56 × 75 cm), Edition 1 of 7 – €5.450,00

ROOTS
Its central idea is roots — not as static heritage, but as a living network of interconnection. In conditions of loss, rupture, and forced displacement, turning toward one’s roots becomes an act of preserving identity.
Traditional Ukrainian costumes do not serve a decorative purpose. They speak of continuity — of transmitting resilience, ritual, and communal ethics from one generation to the next.
The work affirms unity not as a slogan, but as a necessity. It reminds us that cultural and human resilience are born within community — in the capacity to hold one another and to remain connected to the land from which memory and future emerge.Special Edition (42x54,5 cm) Edition 1 of 25 - €1.090,00

PIETA
The work refers to Michelangelo’s Pietà in St. Peter’s Basilica, reimagined within a contemporary Ukrainian context.
At the center of the composition is the image of vulnerability. The female figure embodies fragility — a human being, love, a country, hope — everything that can be wounded and needs protection. The male figure is not portrayed as a hero or a savior. He is the one who remains. The one who carries the weight of another in a moment of weakness.
The throne formed by human bodies does not signify power or dominance. It is a symbol of support. The people create the foundation — a collective structure that makes it possible to hold someone who is losing strength. Without this shared base, no one can endure.
This work speaks about love that requires support. About the truth that no one can stand alone.Small (56 × 75 cm), Edition 1 of 7 – €5.450,00

GUARDING THE ANGELS
Our future is our children.
This simple and undeniable truth became the inspiration for this work.
The children here are not only a symbol of innocence, but the embodiment of continuity — of life, memory, language, and culture. They are the light that must be preserved. Around them forms a living shield — a community that assumes the responsibility of protection.
Today, Ukrainians are not defending an abstract territory. They are defending their future — the right of their children to grow, to love, to create, and to live in freedom.Small (56 × 75 cm), Edition 1 of 7 – €5.450,00

RISE FROM THE KNEES
The photograph is dedicated to the heroes of Ukraine — to those who fight for their home, for the future of their land and their children. To those who bravely defend and protect what cannot be measured in words: the right to live on their own land, to speak their own language, to remember their own history.
From the earth, from pain, from vulnerability, a movement upward is born. The rise is not a triumph, but a necessity. Not a gesture of power, but an act of loyalty.Small (56 × 75 cm), Edition 1 of 7 – €5.450,00

THE TREE OF LIFE
This work is inspired by the ancient symbol of the Tree of Life — one of the central motifs in Ukrainian traditional culture. In folk embroidery, wood carving, and pysanka ornamentation, the Tree of Life represents the structure of the world: roots reaching into the past, a trunk as the support of the present, and branches extending toward the future. In the Ukrainian cultural context, this symbol is closely connected to the idea of rod — the unbroken lineage of generations.

THE FIRE THAT STAYED
At its core lies the belief that humanity must preserve its trust in goodness, love, and unity — even in the darkest of times. The image is built around the idea of an inner light — a warmth that does not extinguish despite hardship.
“As you experience the tragedy of war firsthand, you begin to truly understand what is genuinely important in life.”

Bound spirits
Bound Spirits is a vision of a future shaped through connection. Two souls, united by shared experience and faith, move forward together. We are bound not by fear, but by hope. Not a naive hope — but a conscious one. The hope of those who have passed through transformation and chosen to keep moving.
It is this bond that becomes the force leading us into the future.Special Edition (42x54,5 cm) Edition 1 of 25 - € 1.090,00

Our Cast
In this photograph stand 18 Ukrainian dancers whose lives have been transformed by war.
They come from Odesa, Kremenchuk, Kyiv, and other cities across Ukraine, leaving behind their homes and the reality they once knew.
Today they live far from their homeland, yet they continue to carry it within them.
This project brought them together to speak, through art, about resilience, dignity, and the inner strength of their people — to remind us that the war in their home is still ongoing, while also reflecting on something deeply human: the importance of compassion, the value of every life, and the need to hold on to light and mutual understanding even in times of darkness. Through the movements captured in Wings of Light, they express what cannot be fully articulated in words.Small (56 × 75 cm), Edition 1 of 7 – €5.450,00
